Tianjin University of Technology and Education (TUTE), known as the “Cradle of Cultivating Teaching Staff for Vocational Education in China”, was founded in 1979. It is one of the first normal universities in China to produce vocational teachers and applied technicians. It is the only local university in Tianjin to be co-built by Ministry of Education of China and Tianjin Municipal Government.
TUTE sticks to the educational philosophy of “combining theoretic studies with hands-on training to achieve all-round development”. Since 1990s, a new mode has been initiated to produce talents. Integrated vocational teachers have been produced by double-certificate system. “Double-certificate” refers to the degree certificate and a national vocational qualification certificate, which the students get upon graduation. TUTE received 1st prize of national teaching achievements twice by this teaching model.
Disciplines and Programs
TUTE has 7 disciplines, namely engineering, education, science, management, economics, literature and art, which are operated by 10 colleges. It has a postdoctoral workstation, 7 first-level discipline master’s programs, 4 professional degree programs and 44 bachelor’s programs.
TUTE covers an area of more than 800,000m2 with a construction area of over 470,000m2 and 1,8000 full-time students, including undergraduate, postgraduate, PHD and international students. Teachers with technical qualifications make up 70% of those with double certificates. TUTE has 11 national experiment demonstration units (Engineering Training Center) and training centers, 160 training laboratories, 5 innovation bases and advanced laboratory.
Research and Social Services
Approved by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, TUTE has been rated among the first universities as 13 training bases. TUTE is the leading body of Vocational Teachers Committee of China Vocational and Technical Education Society, Normal Vocational and Technical School Union, Degree and Postgraduate Education Society and the executive leading body of Vocational Guidance Committee. Over the past 5 years, TUTE organized and hosted vocational and technical contests. TUTE also provides technical support and evaluation for Tianjin CNC Skills Contest, National Vocational and Technical Contest.
TUTE is the Headquarter of the Association of Universities (Colleges) of Applied Sciences to develop the cooperation with the similar alliance in the world. TUTE also sets up the World Skills-Chinese Research Center to provide guidance to the contestants for world skill competition and the Center of African Union Studies to do some research projects in the African fields.
International Exchange and Cooperation
TUTE attaches great importance to develop the international exchange and cooperation and has got a lot of achievements in the past few years.
1. Confucius Institutes
With the great help and support of Headquarters of Confucius Institutes (Hanban), TUTE has set up 2 Confucius Institutes, 4 Confucius Classrooms and 4 Chinese-Language Centers in the first-level universities in Ethiopia since the year 2009, where the Chinese-language undergraduate programs are developed and the local graduates have got good jobs being the Chinese majors. In the past six years, TUTE has increased rich experience in operating Confucius Institutes, one of the Confucius Institutes won the Prize of “Excellent Confucius Institute” and some Chinese directors also won the “Excellent” personal prize by Hanban. In April.2016, TUTE assigned the Chinese teachers and volunteers to teach Chinese language at Wintec University in New Zealand.
TUTE has enrolled nearly 1,000 international students from more than 70 countries for both short-term and long-term study since 2003. More than 200 undergraduates, postgraduates and Chinese Language students from Ethiopia, Tanzania, Nigeria, Poland, Ukraine, Thailand, etc. study in TUTE yearly.
3. Educational Foreign-Aid
As the first foreign aid base approved by the Ministry of Education, TUTE has made remarkable achievements in foreign aid in Africa. TUTE has participated in the construction work of “Ethio-China Polytechnic College” since 2007. In 2014, TUTE set up ASEAN Educational Training Center authorized by MoFA and MoE. TUTE has assigned over 200 TVET instructors and experts to work in the developing countries and held vocational education training programs for African and Asian countries, with over 1000 trainees benefited.
4. International Cooperation
TUTE has established multilevel exchange and cooperation projects with more than 40 universities from USA, Germany, Belgium, Ireland, New Zealand, Ethiopia, etc., TUTE assigns students to foreign counties like USA, Korea, Poland and New Zealand to attend different kinds of exchange programs. Furthermore, TUTE also enthusiastically develops the joint programs with the universities from American, European and African countries.
